HUNTINGTON BEACH – Quarterback Will Burns ran for 3 touchdowns and passed for another to help lead No. 4 state-ranked Golden West College to a 34-7 win over visiting Cerritos College on Saturday at Rustler Stadium.
The Rustlers improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the National Central League. Golden West has won six straight games as it heads into its regular-season finale next Saturday (Nov. 16) at Mt. San Antonio College.
Barring an upset of Mt. SAC by Long Beach City College tonight, Golden West and the Mounties will both be unbeaten in league play and will battle for the Central League championship and automatic bid into the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
Before the Central League title rematch could happen, the Rustlers had to get past Cerritos on Saturday. After a scoreless opening quarter, the two squads broke through for a touchdown, including a 1-yard TD run by Burns, to go into halftime tied up at 7-7.
But Golden West came alive over the final two quarter to cruise to the win. Burns closed out a pair of Rustler scoring drives in the third with TD runs of 4 and 1 yard and Fernando Mancilla nailed the first of a pair of field goals from 34 yards to give GWC a 24-7 lead.
Mancilla hit his final field goal from 32 yards and Burns connected with Hideo Ray for a 48-yard touchdown reception at the 10:23 mark in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Burns completed 15 of 23 passes for 261 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. He also ran 17 times for 91 yards and 3 TDs.
The Golden West defense was solid once again, holding its opponent to 10 points or less for the fourth time. The Rustlers allowed just 34 yards rushing, recovered a fumble, had an interception, and totaled 2 sacks. Brandon Soleau led with 8 tackles.
Next week's Central League showdown is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Mt. SAC's Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut.
