COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College football team started well and ended well, but visiting Cerritos College took care of the middle and the end result was a Falcons' 28-14 win over the Pirates on Saturday night at LeBard Stadium.
The Pirates grabbed the early lead after taking their first possession down the field on a 7-play, 46-yard drive, capped off with a Paul Mendoza 9-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Zach Congalton.
Unfortunately for OCC, that would be it for the fireworks until a last-minute touchdown connected from Congalton to Anthony Osario with 34 seconds left in the game.
Falcons' quarterback Evan Tomich threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-41 passing. Cheo Medina rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown, while top receiver Chase Grosfeld caught 10 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.
For the Pirates, Congalton threw for 153 yards and two TDs and ran for 86 yards on 12 carries. Jeremiah Espitia caught two passes for 74 yards.
The Pirate defense was led by the 1-2 punch of Rocky Jack, who had a game-best 12 tackles and Jayden Niumata, who had nine tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss.
Coast will return to LeBard Stadium on Saturday against East Los Angeles College, beginning at 1 p.m.
