In a thrilling clash at Merrill Douglas Stadium, the Olympian football team mounted a remarkable comeback but ultimately fell to Saddleback College.
The Bobcats, energized for what they considered "one of their biggest games in years," stormed out of the gates with a relentless offensive attack. Quarterback Trey Kukuk orchestrated three early scoring drives, including a 32-yard field goal by Sean Olvera-Har, a rushing touchdown, and a touchdown pass to Andrez Lewis, giving Saddleback a commanding 17-0 halftime lead.
The typically formidable Mesa defense, which had only allowed 29 points in their previous four games, struggled to contain the Bobcats' offense. However, the Olympians' coaching staff rallied the team at halftime, inspiring them to keep fighting.
With possession of the ball in the third quarter, Jax Leatherwood led a methodical 12-play, 59-yard drive, culminating in a Mesa field goal to put the Olympians on the scoreboard, 17-3. Sparked by the field goal and a defensive resurgence anchored by Jayden Cortell's impressive 14 solo tackles, Mesa began to claw their way back into contention.
Quarterback Jax Leatherwood, moving around beautifully in the pocket, engineered a touchdown drive late in the third quarter, capped off by a 3-yard touchdown pass to Conor Lawlor. The momentum shifted and Mesa closed the gap to 17-10.
Saddleback responded with a touchdown of their own, extending their lead to 23-10. However, the Olympians refused to surrender. Leatherwood connected with Dazure Paggett for an 11-yard touchdown, narrowing the deficit to 23-17.
With both teams trading blows, the game came down to a few crucial plays. A pivotal third-down and eleven conversion by Kukuk, finding a diving Will Craven for 16 yards, allowed the Bobcats to maintain possession and kick a field goal, pushing their lead to 26-17.
Just when it seemed the Bobcats had sealed the victory, Jalil Tucker electrified the crowd with a stunning 95-yard punt return for a touchdown, bringing Mesa within striking distance at 26-24. However, their ensuing onside kick attempt was unsuccessful, securing the hard-fought win for Saddleback.
Despite the loss, the team was valiant in their effort to fight back. Head Coach Gary Watkins will undoubtedly use this game as a valuable teaching moment, emphasizing the importance of starting strong. As he consistently reminds his team, "There is no such thing as an easy game at this level, you have a target on your back, and you have to come out with intensity right from the start.'
