LANCASTER - It's been a long time since the Marauder football team has defeated arch rival College of the Canyons.
Since 1998 to be exact and nothing changed on Saturday night in the opening game of the season for both teams.
On paper the final statistics were evenly matched, except for the final score in which Canyons (1-0) outscored the Marauders, 21-9 in the second half as the Cougars ran away with a 42-30 victory over AVC at Marauder Stadium.
Despite three touchdown passes from Armani Edden, AVC (0-1) just couldn't keep up with COC as its quarterback Andrew Brito tossed five touchdown passes of his own.
"We had a good first half, but in the second half I thought we came out flat," AVC receiver Jordan Wayne said. "We didn't get the job done tonight and now we must go back to the drawing board. Everybody must lock in and learn from our mistakes. I know we can definitely bounce back from this loss."
The Cougars struck first, but each time they did the Marauders had an answer for their score. AVC had three extensive drives in the first half, 10 plays or more on each drive, all of which resulted in touchdown tosses by Edden. Two of those touchdown passes went to Jordan Wayne and the other was to Blake Verrett as the Marauders went into the locker room tied, 21-21.
COC built its largest lead of the game, 42-24, following Brito's fifth touchdown pass to Jarrin Pierce from 23 yards out. Brito finished the game 16-of-33 for 243 yards. His counterpart Edden was 14-of-23 for 119 yards.
COC had 294 yards of total offense compared to AVC's 286. The Marauders were solid against the run, holding the Cougars to only 34 yards rushing.
COC has defeated AVC in 11 consecutive meetings and it holds a 14-4 all-time overall record against the Marauders.
