COD Football scores 37 points in 37th COD-SBVC Challenge, knocking off the Wolverines, 37-20

COD (1-0) opened the new football season with a win for the first time since 2011 and claimed the COD-SBVC Challenge Trophy for the first time since 2015, knocking off the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (0-1), 37-20.

Sophomore running back, Arieon Capler (Palm Springs H.S.), not only had 100 yards on the ground on 18 carries, including a long of 17 yards and a score, he also threw a 52 yard pass for a score. Sophomore defensive back Darrell Lewis (Palm Desert Xavier College Prep) led the Roadrunners in total tackles, with 4 solo, he also grabbed a sack, 2 broken up passes and a quarter back hurry on the night. Freshman punter Steven Muratalla-Gonzalez (Palm Springs H.S.) did it all for the Roadrunners tonight, handling punts and kick offs as he had 3 punts for a total of 103 yards, including 2 punts inside the 20, and 7 kickoffs, averaging 52.3 yards per kick.

The Roadrunners played the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines for the first time in program history in 1981, back when SBVC was named the Indians and have a 16-21 record against the Wolverines. Desert has an 9-9 record at home in this series. The next game for Desert is on Saturday, September 10th at the Los Angeles Valley Monarchs of Valley Glen. The Roadrunners first played LA Valley in 1986 and have a 5-4 overall record against the Monarchs. Desert has a 2-2 record at Valley Glen. The next home game for the Roadrunners is on September 17th, when Desert will host the Citrus Fighting Owls of Glendora. The Roadrunners first played Citrus in 1988 and have a 7-12 overall record against the Owls. Desert has a 6-2 record at home against Citrus.
