SBVC Football fights hard in game against Owls, 33-9

SBVC (0-3) put up a valiant effort against the Glendora Citrus Fighting Owls (3-0), an early score by the Owls did not detour the home side, as they took a 9-7 lead late in the first half, but turnovers and costly penalties led to a Citrus win, 33-9.

SBVC would open the game on the 50 yard line, but moments later, Citrus would sack freshman quarterback Kendal Williams (Orlando (FL) Colonial) which caused a fumble recovered by the Owls. Five plays later Citrus found the end zone and it looked like the home opener was going to be a bust.

Then SBVC started to put a drive together and after getting to a first and goal at the 10, SBVC's Williams fumbled the ball and Citrus picked up the gift again. Not to be out done, SBVC outside linebacker Kashiem Poland (Philadelphia (PA) Frankford) decided to return the favor and picked off an Owls pass at the Citrus 25 yard line. Five plays later, freshman kicker Humberto Ramirez (Fontana H.S.) converted a 22 yard field goal into three points, getting SBVC to within four, 7-3.

The Owls would hold that four-point lead early into the second quarter, then SBVC grabbed a great punt return by sophomore defensive back Kionce Roberts (Eastvale Eleanor Roosevelt) giving SBVC some great field position. Five plays and 11 yards later, SBVC connected on its second field goal of the night, from 25 yards out Ramirez put SBVC within one-point, 7-6.

On the next drive for Citrus they attempted a fake punt on fourth down which, thanks to an alert play by Poland, turned into a seven yard loss for the Owls, giving SBVC another short field to work with. Six plays later, Ramirez would convert that into another three-points, giving SBVC their first lead of the season, 9-7 with 9:38 left in the first half.

After a Citrus interception late in the third quarter, they would jump back on the scoreboard again with a two yard touchdown run.

Sophomore wide receiver Blake Fisher (Rancho Cuacmonga H.S.) and freshman wide receiver Brandin McDowell (Rialto Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower) both led SBVC with 59 yards through the air and Williams led the team going 11 for 26 for 155 yards passing. Poland and sophomore defensive back Jakeil Hampton (Riverside John Wesley North) led the SBVC defense with nine total tackles on the night.
