Mesa College dominates Southwestern College 68-23

After a 17-7 loss to Fullerton College, followed by a 35-7 drubbing from Golden West College last week, the San Diego Mesa College football team needed to do some soul searching in order to salvage the 2022 campaign. Despite having struggled in 2022, Southwestern College is not a team to take lightly. As a matter of fact, since 2016, the Jaguars hold a 3-2 head-to-head lead over Mesa College. 

However, the night belonged to the Olympians, as the players answered head coach Gary Watkins' call to dominate in all three phases of the game, soundly defeating Southwestern College 68-23. 

Gunnar Gray had an impressive performance going 19-29 for 296 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. On the ground, the combination of Daniel Latanca and Junior Akintunde tallied up a total of 274 yards. Latanka rushed for 148 yards with a long of 50 yards and 2 touchdowns. Akintunde on 9 carries added 86 yards and averaged 9.6 per carry. Latanka also caught a 10- yard pass for a touchdown from Gray in the 3rd quarter. Wide receiver Desean Owens caught 4 passes tallying 91 yards and averaged 22.8 yards a catch. Antoine Sullivan added 75 yards with 1 touchdown. Timieone Jackson also caught 1 touchdown along with 59 yards. 

On the defensive side of the ball, Michael Harkins led the team with 6 solo tackles and 1 assist. Connor Battaglia contributed with 5 total tackles and 1 forced fumble. Tyson Shields also contributed, having 1 pass interception. Mauricio Escudero was 2 of 2 on field goal tries and was 8 of 9 on points after try. 

The Olympians finish the season at 6-4 (3-2 conference). The offense averaged 331.1 yards per game (107.8 rushing; 223.3 passing) and 26.5 points per game. The defense averaged 326.9 yards allowed (124.7 rush; 202.2 pass).
