COD (1-0) opened up the 2023 season in a big way, as their defense made huge stops with a balanced offense attack that ground up over 440 yards of total offense and the Roadrunners won big on the road, defeating the Glendale Vaqueros (0-1), 33-14.

The Roadrunners played against the Glendale Vaqueros for the first time in program history in 1972 and hold a 2-5 overall record against the Vaqueros. Desert has a 2-2 record against the Vaqueros in Glendale.

Sophomore running back Ilyas Abdullah from Westchester Enriched Sciences in Playa Del Rey had an amazing opener to the 2023 season grabbing 99 yards on 17 carries on the ground and 45 yards on 2 receptions in the air for the Roadrunners. Sophomore linebacker Greyson Lafleur from Glacier Peak in Snohomish, Washington had an amazing opener to the 2023 season grabbing 4 total tackles, 3 solo and a sack for a loss of 10 yards. The sack by Lafleur in the beginning of the second quarter stalled out an aggressive drive by Glendale forcing them to punt, which Desert turned into a field goal, giving the Roadrunners an 11-7 lead with 7:01 left in the first half. Freshman kicker Dylan Armendariz from Palm Springs H.S. kicked off the opener to the 2023 season grabbing a key 2nd quarter field goal and connecting on two 4th quarter extra points as well as 5 kickoffs totaling 272 yards as the Roadrunners collected their second consecutive win at the Glendale Vaqueros.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on September 9, California Admission Day, when Desert hosts the Santa Monica Corsairs. Desert first competed against the Corsairs in 1986 and hold a 4-2 overall record against them. The last these two teams met was in 2019 in Palm Desert, when the Roadrunners throttled Santa Monica in the second game of the season, 49-0. Desert holds a 1-2 record against the Corsairs in Palm Desert.
