SBVC Football opens up new era with victory over Vaqueros, 18-10

SBVC (1-0) started the regular season with an impressive inaugural victory for head coach John Shipp, getting fantastic production from both sides of the ball and knocking off the Santa Barbara City Vaqueros (0-1), 18-10.

Both programs had never met before in football and with the scenic confines, SBVC got to work. While the Vaqueros grabbed the opening score, SBVC pounded in 18 unanswered points, until Santa Barbara City made the game close late. Eventually, the game came down to a final play on the SBVC 22 yard line and thanks to SBVC's defensive pressure and the Vaqueros quarterback who heaved the football seven yards beyond the end zone, SBVC sealed the win.

Two SBVC running backs both had over 110 yards rushing on the afternoon; sophomore running back Alijah Watson (San Bernardino Cajon) had 15 carries for 112 yards, averaging 7.5 yards per carry with a long of 54. Sophomore running back Kendrick Dorn (Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos) proves that he is just as dominant this year as he was last year with 18 carries for 111 yards, averaging 6.2 yards per carry with a long of 26 and a touchdown, in addition, his two catches out of the backfield that totaled 37 yards.

Freshman quarterback Ricardo Johnson III (St. Paul, MN Cretin-Derham Hall) put together a remarkable performance going 15 for 27 with 248 yards through the air and 23 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Sophomore defensive lineman Shalon Moore (San Bernardino Pacific) and sophomore defensive lineman Spencer Hoff (La Verne Bonita) both led the defensive attack for SBVC, with both players collecting 2.5 sacks each and sophomore defensive back Angel Delgado (Fontana Henry J. Kaiser) grabbing both interceptions.

Sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Gibbs (Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos) caught seven passes for 84 yards, averaging 12 yards per catch with a long of 22 yards and sophomore wide receiver Darian Barrientos-Jackson (Omaha, NE Omaha Central) caught two passes for 83 yards, averaging 41.5 yards per catch with a long of 70 yards. SBVC had 24 first downs compared to Santa Barbara City which collected only 16.
