SBVC Football puts on a show late, but falls to the Vaqueros, 38-28

SBVC (2-1) opened the game with a lengthy drive and a touchdown, but then proceeded to surrender the next 31 points unanswered, only to roar back to within three with less than a minute left, but fell short at the Glendale Vaqueros (3-0), 38-28.

Sophomore running back Kendrick Dorn (Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos) had another impressive performance with 21 carries for 111 yards and 1 TD, along with three catches for 14 yards at Glendale. The yardage for this game give Dorn a Mountain League leading 374 total yards and the touchdown gives him a League leading four on the young season.

SBVC opened up the game with a seven play, 59 yard drive that culminated in a 23 yard touchdown connection from freshman quarterback Ricardo Johnson III (St. Paul, MN Cretin-Derham Hall) to sophomore wide receiver Shleton Mosley (San Bernardino H.S.) to give the visitors the early, 7-0 lead.

On the very next drive, Glendale tied the game at 7-7 and then added one more score less than two minutes later to give them a 14-7 lead at the end of one. At the beginning of the second quarter SBVC had a prime opportunity, but the 37-yard field goal attempt by sophomore kicker Cody Madsen (Redlands East Valley) was pushed wide left. The Vaqueros would add two more touchdowns as both teams went into halftime with Glendale leading 28-7.

Glendale added a field goal late in the third quarter to give the home side a 31-7 lead going into the fourth quarter, then the wheels came off for the Vaqueros. I'm unsure if something clicked for SBVC or if Glendale just got overconfident, or both, but SBVC went on 21-point tare that is simply unexplainable.

SBVC went 57 yards in five plays ending up with a Johnson III dialing in sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Gibbs (Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos) for a 33 yard score and then four minutes later finding the end zone again, as sophomore running back Alijah Watson (San Bernardino Cajon) darted in from 12 yards out to get SBVC within ten points, 31-21.

The stars really started to line up as SBVC received a punt, then the Vaqueros committed a personal foul penalty after the play giving SBVC the yardage on the return (9 yards) plus 15 yards, putting them on the Glendale 15 yard line. One play later, Dorn was leaping his way to the house to put SBVC within three, 28-31, with 5:29 left in the game.

The game did come down to one possession as the clock was down to 59 seconds left, the Vaqueros were in a 3rd and long situation and did a fake run to the left side and the quarterback took the ball to the right and galloped untouched 37 yards to give Glendale a 10 point lead with less than a minute left.

SBVC committed 13 penalties on the night totaling 108 yards and Glendale committed 15 penalties for 139 yards.

Madsen, maintaining two roles on special teams, as kicker and punter, he made all four of his extra point attempts and had five punts for 167 yards, averaging 33.4 yards per punt, including one punt inside the 20.

Freshman linebacker Colbert Calhoun (Riverside John Wesley North) had 16 total tackles, four solo, 1.5 sacks for a loss of eight yards and 2.5 tackles for a total loss of nine yards.
